Obesity and smoking linked to hearing loss

Becoming overweight or taking up smoking can lead to hearing loss, a new study warns.

International research suggests that every extra pound or cigarette could increase the chances of becoming deaf.

Scientists found that although the most important risk factor in hearing loss was exposure to workplace noise, there was also a “significant association” with both smoking and weight problems.

Erik Fransen, from the University of Antwerp in Belgium, who led the study, said it was difficult to estimate by how much either factor increased the risk.
