Outdoor smoking laws tough enough

Adopting tougher outdoor smoking area laws in NSW could push smokers onto the streets, creating a nightmare scenario for neighbours and pedestrians, clubs say.

Employee and health groups, under the banner of SmokeFree Australia, want an urgent review of anti-smoking legislation in the wake of a NSW Health report released on Friday.

NSW pubs and clubs poured millions of US dollars into outdoor smoking areas to comply with new laws but the study found air quality in many areas remained “poor”.

The survey was based on air-quality readings in more than 40 Sydney and regional NSW pubs and clubs before and after smoking was prohibited in enclosed areas on July 2, 2007.
