Aussie sports star hasn’t had water for three years and dietician ‘wasn’t happy’
GWS Giants rookie Jason Gillbee revealed a strange quirk that will have left the team's dietician far from impressed.
The Australian rules football star has not drunk water for an astonishing three years after opting to replace it with milk. The baffling news was announced on the team's Twitter account earlier today in a post featuring the 19-year-old gulping straight from a two-litre bottle of his favourite beverage.
“Every Monday during this pre-season one player has been asked to bring in three items that are important to them as a means of finding out something new about their teammates,” the post explained.
It continued: “It's on this particular week that the GIANTS onballers learn the startling revelation that first-year rookie Jason Gillbee replaced all of his water intake with milk three years ago. ‘Mel [club dietician Melissa Juergens] wasn't happy when she found out,' he says to the stunned faces around him.”

Those in the comments gave their best efforts to try and digest the startling revelation, including Twitter user @Taezer87. “He needs to put on mass,” they wrote. “I challenge 'dietician Mel' that it's an excellent move… maybe not replace all water, but certainly a gallon of milk a day is worthwhile.”
@LordRichmond17 added:” Haha this for real ? This blokes whips out some full cream after a 2k run ? That’s quality stuff.” Writing under the Giants’ Instagram post, Gillbee joked: “Dad taught me to drink from the glass but we didn’t have any”.
Drinking milk after heavy exercise – especially after lifting weights – can be beneficial as it contains whey protein and carbohydrates, plus saturated fats that will help underweight people add size to their frame.
But considering an incredible amount of running is required in Aussie Rules, especially onballers, it is remarkable how the teen has been able to consistently perform at a high level without drinking water.
Gillbee decided on the strange move after he relocated to Bendigo in Victoria three years ago. Despite his odd diet, Gillbee starred for the Bendigo Pioneers in the NAB League.
After he ranked equal first in the 2km time trial at the AFL Draft Combine, Gillbee was pre-drafted by the Giants as a category B rookie ahead of the rookie draft. As he prepares for a step up in quality, Gillbee will need to ensure his nutrition is up to scratch.
