Baseball player Rodolfo Castro was left embarrassed after receiving a call-up to the major league but forgetting his phone was in his back pocket, breaking league rules.

The 23-year-old was playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates in Major League Baseball when the incident happened as Castro slid head first into third base and his phone flew onto the field. It happened right in front of third base umpire Adam Hamari who immediately saw the phone and pointed to the device on the ground.

Infielder Castro, who had been recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis for the game, said he had forgotten to take the phone out of pocket and it was an honest mistake.

“I don’t think there’s any professional ballplayer that would ever go out there with any intentions of taking a cellphone,” Castro told Pittsburgh media members through an interpreter. “It’s horrible it happened to me. Obviously, it was very unintentional.

“My first day back, if I was to be the center of attention, I would want it to be helping the team win, but never in this form. This is definitely something that was an accident, a mistake, something I’m going to learn from. But definitely something I didn’t mean to happen.”

On top of his embarrassment Castro could face a fine from the league which has a rule banning electronic devices on the field or in the dugout.

The Dominican player was supported by Pirates manager Derek Shelton who added: “You stay around the game and you see things you haven’t seen before. This was just a kid who made a mistake. It’s just one of those things we move forward from and tell him, ‘You can’t do that.’”

The incident happened on a disappointing evening for the Pirates who lost the game to the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-4.
