Anthony Joshua reveals what Floyd Mayweather told him after Kubrat Pulev victory

Floyd Mayweather was a surprise attendee at Wembley Arena on Saturday night to watch Anthony Joshua produce a stunning knockout victory over Kubrat Pulev and take one step closer to a heavyweight unification fight against Tyson Fury.

Joshua, who hadn’t fought in over a year, displayed few signs of signs of ring rust against an obdurate opponent who had been beaten only once previously during his career.

A devastating flurry of punches eventually settled a one-sided contest in the ninth round after which Joshua sought out Mayweather in the crowd. The pair embraced and shared a brief conversation which was caught on camera, with Joshua revealing the unbeaten former welterweight king told him the sport of boxing was a case of ‘chess not checkers’.

Joshua later referenced that exchange again in message to his fans on his official YouTube channel, when he said: ‘What can I say, this is the fight game, at the same time I’m not in competition with anyone apart from myself.

‘I’m staying true to myself, learning every day, I get older, I get wiser, I learn that this boxing game is chess and not checkers. I play a smart game and I make the right moves at the right time.

‘Round nine, I got the knockout and onto the next.’

Speaking ahead of Joshua’s destruction of Pulev, Mayweather branded the 31-year-old as one of the ‘best heavyweights out there’ and claimed he was proud of the Londoner.

‘It’s always good to see some great boxing,’ he told Sky Sports. ‘The UK is a great place, so many great fighters. I am proud of Anthony Joshua, and it’s lights, camera, action.

‘He is one of the best heavyweights out there. Got a gold medal before. His career is going great, he is a hell of a fighter.

‘Anything can happen in the sport of boxing, one shot can change it all. He is a great fighter, hell of a guy a gentleman and I respect his craft.’
