Conor McGregor vows to return from "illegitimate" defeat with injury update

Conor McGregor confirmed he had suffered a "clean break of the tibia" as he fired a message to rival Dustin Poirier over his "illegitimate" win.

The clash between the pair in Las Vegas on Saturday was called to an end following just one round after McGregor's leg buckled underneath him, leading doctors to stop the contest.

McGregor insisted their feud was "not over" as he sat on the floor of the Octagon before he was carried from the arena on a stretcher.

Now the 31-year-old has updated his followers on social media as he thanked them for their support after undergoing successful surgery.

"Whats up fight fans, the Notorious here," McGregor said on Twitter. "Just out of the surgery room, everything went to plan, everything went perfect. I’m feeling tremendous.

"We got six weeks on a crutch now and then we begin to build back. I want to say thank you all the fans around the world for the messages of support, I hope you all enjoyed the show

"I want to thank all the fans in who came to the T-Mobile arena – 21,800 fans in attendance. The place was absolutely electric.

"It was a hell of a first round it would have been nice to get into that second round but it is what it is, that’s the nature of the business, it was a clean break of the tibia and it was not to be.

"Dustin you can celebrate that illegitimate win all you want but you done nothing in there.

"That second round would have shown all and onwards and upwards we go team, we dust ourselves off, we build ourselves back and we come back better than ever. Let’s go team."

McGregor's leg was clearly broken when he tumbled to the canvas after rolling on his ankle as he missed with a punch.

But American Poirier claims McGregor actually fractured his ankle earlier in the round.

“He [McGregor] fractured it in one of the checks at the beginning of the fight, then it broke on the punch for sure," Poirier said.

“When I pointed at him in the beginning of the fight, that’s when I checked the good kick, I bet that’s when it cracked.”

McGregor looked to be on top of the bout up to that point but the defeat comes as another blow to his flailing career, though he was adamant he will meet Poirier for a fourth time to settle the score.

“Your wife is in my DMs, hey baby,” McGregor snapped as his opponent returned to the dressing rooms.

“Hit me back up I’ll chat to you later on, I’ll be at the after party at the Wynn night club. You look in bits you little h**!

“I was boxing the ears off him, kicking the legs off him, usual s**** he dived to close the distance.

“This is not over! If I have to take this outside with him it’s on outside I don’t give a b*******.”
