Dan Hardy calls Nate Diaz vs Chimaev fight ‘an assassination attempt’ and says charges should be pressed against the UFC over dangerous mismatch
- Nate Diaz and Khamzat Chimaev are set to hit the Octogon in September
- Commentator Dan Hardy is alarmed at the huge discrepancy between the pair
- He has slammed the UFC’s Diaz treatment and called it an ‘assasination attempt’
UFC star turned commentator Dan Hardy is so incensed at the lopsided Nate Diaz vs Khamzat Chimaev match-up set for Las Vegas in September, he has slammed the organisation and called the fight an ‘assasination attempt’ against Diaz.
The ageing Diaz and in-form Chimaev are set to fight as the headline act of UFC 279 on September 10 in the Sin City, but fans were quick to write off the veteran’s chances.
‘RIP Nate Diaz’ one wrote on Twitter, while another tweeted that ‘Nate Diaz has signed his death sentence.’
It sounds dramatic, but Hardy, who is now a prominent commentator following his successful 25-10-0 fight career, agreed.

Former UFC star turned commentator Dan Hardy has lashed the decision on the organisation to set up a fight between Chimaev and Diaz
‘I just hope Nate comes through it alright, because I think he’s got good opportunities outside the UFC. It’s just a shame that they’re going to do this assassination attempt on him before he leaves,’ Hardy told The MMA Hour.
It comes as the Diaz, who has had 25 fights in the UFC, said he has been ‘held hostage’ by the organisation.
The 21-13-0 veteran has been trying to exit the UFC, but has been given the runaround; and claims the organisation refused to book him fights while they were trying to negotiate a new contract.
Diaz has claimed he is being ‘held hostage’ by the UFC over him trying to exit the organisation
Reportedly the UFC would not have booked Diaz in for the lopsided match-up against Chimaev if they were able to sign him to a new contract – something Hardy absolutely slammed.
‘It doesn’t feel like a fair fight. It feels like a very, very cruel thing to do to someone that is a legitimate legend. Because they’ve spoken out against the organization, they’re going to get executed live on TV,’ he said.
Diaz has been one of the USA’s most popular fighters despite a lack of top-flight opponents, since beginning his career way back in 2004, but there’s no doubt his skills are on the decline.

Chimaev (11-0-0) on the other hand, is an absolute brutal fighter, and the Chechen-Swede has had six knockouts in his unbeaten 11-fight career.
Hardy is a big fan of Chimaev, but is clearly just firm in his belief that this fight should not happen given the current disparity in their skills.
Hardy was damning of the UFC’s supposedly vindictive behaviour, something he said has long been common with the organisation.

‘I love Khamzat Chimaev – I just think they’re in different positions right now. He’s on the rise, and Diaz is a legend that is on his way out,’ he said.
I just feel very unfortunate that it’s happening, and that we can’t celebrate these fighters when they’re coming to the end of their career.
‘But it’s the UFC’s style, isn’t it? If they decide they’re parting ways with you, they try to damage you in every way possible,’ said Hardy.
Chimaev is at the unbackable odds of $1.08 for the fight, and UFC fans were in full agreeance of his favouritism, fearing for Diaz’s safety.
Twitter user wrote: ‘Nate Diaz has signed his death sentence, and will be fighting (getting mauled by) Khamzat Chimaev on UFC 279’s 5 round main event on 10 Sept. I am ELATED. This is sooooo perfect. My favorite fighter is going to be the one to end Nate Diaz. What a gift.’
Another user joked: ‘Dana White is going to kill off Nate Diaz like it’s Game of Thrones’.
For his part, Chimaev is prepared to sign the death warrant after ominously telling ESPN reporter Brett Okamoto that he is ‘going to handle Nate Diaz’s funeral with the UFC.’
Diaz has stated that he intends on pursuing opportunities outside of the UFC following the expiation of his contract.
