Dana White has confirmed the UFC would be interested in signing Michael Chandler now that the Bellator legend is a free agent.
Chandler let his deal with Bellator expire so he could test the waters of free agency and his last fight with the promotion was a scintillating performance against Benson Henderson earlier this month.
The UFC have watched from afar as Chandler became Bellator’s lightweight champion and grew into one of the promotions biggest stars.
Chandler has said he is willing to re-sign with Bellator if they meet his demands but UFC president White has now entered the conversation.
‘I would love to meet with him,’ White said when asked if the UFC were interested in Chandler. ‘Yeah. The guy’s earned it, man. I would love to meet with him.’
Chandler is 34 years old but recently said he expects to fight for at least another five years.
The UFC’s lightweight division is arguably one of the best of any weight class in the world, with the likes of Dustin Poirier, Justin Gaethje, Conor McGregor, Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov on the roster.
Chandler is yet to give any clear indication of his next move, but did post a cryptic message on Instagram after White’s comments.
He said: ‘Throw yourself into the fire so at worst you can feel the agony of defeat but at best you will feel the thrill of victory while daring greatly.
‘This life was not meant to be lived lukewarm. See you in the fire. See you at the top!’
Fight fans would love to see Chandler enter the UFC’s ranks after years of speculating whether Bellator’s best could compete with their promotional rivals.
