Daniel Cormier has been taken to hospital after his final fight in the UFC.

The veteran called time on his glittering career after losing for the second time in his trilogy with Stipe Miocic, but he did have time to bemoan an eye poke that was missed by referee Marc Goddard.

After being warned for a poke of his own, DC was caught by the champion which left him with a notable swelling for the crucial final two rounds of the highly anticipated bout.

The 41-year-old mentioned his injury to Joe Rogan after his unanimous points defeat, but didn’t go as far as blaming it for his failure to secure the win.

An emotional Cormier said: “I can't see.

“He did a good job; he was able to clinch and hold me against the octagon for long periods of time and I believe that separated the close rounds.

“I can't see anything out of my left eye, it's black but it is what it is.

“I told Marc but he said he thought it was a punch but after he said he'd seen it on the replay. I just can't see out of my left eye, it is what it is.”

After saying of the result: “It sucks. Being on the losing end of two fights in a trilogy is a very sad fight to be in, but I will deal with it.

“But this will be it for me, I’ve had a long run and just fought a great fight but this will be it.

“I only want to fight in title fights and I don’t believe I will be fighting in them any longer.”

In what could prove to be one of the biggest fights in the history of the sport, UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones announced his intention to challenge Miocic shortly after the bout.

He wrote on Twitter: “Heavyweight world championships I will be seeing you real soon. Victorious.”

Before saying: “For some reason these heavyweights don’t seem so big to me tonight.”

Concluding with: “Avoid Stipe’s right hand, I’m too fast.

“I’ll be too strong when the time is right and have way too much energy. Soon and very soon I’ll be considered the baddest man on this planet.”
