Fans spotted ‘nervous’ Anthony Joshua chewing mystery object before Usyk defeat

Boxing fans predicted Anthony Joshua's defeat to Oleksandr Usyk after catching a glimpse of the British fighter looking "nervous" chewing on a mystery object before the clash.

Joshua was unable to avenge his first defeat to Ukrainian at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium 11 months ago on Saturday night, losing his world-title challenge by split decision. AJ showed significant improvement from their first encounter but ultimately lost out on the judges' scorecards, with two judges scoring the fight 115-113 in favour of Usyk.

The Ukrainian fighter had been expected to retain his belts, and boxing fans had even more confidence in him after catching a glimpse of Joshua in the build-up to the Saudi Arabian showdown.

Joshua was caught on camera chewing on what looked like his gum shield inside the King Abdullah Sports City. Some fans took it as a sign that the 32-year-old was nervous ahead of the bout, with one writing: "He doesn't look confident."

Someone else said: "Joshua looks scared and nervous." As a third person commented: "Anthony Joshua looks nervous pre fight to me, I reckon the pressure is gonna get to him."

A fourth user added: "Joshua looks NERVOUS lads." While a fifth boxing fan chimed in with: "Anthony Joshua looks scared." Although Joshua's performance didn't smack of a fighter who was scared, he still didn't do enough to win the fight.

While there were some close rounds, Usyk was the deserved winner. "Usyk is one hell of a fighter. That's just emotion," Joshua said afterwards.

"If you knew my story, you'd understand the passion. I'm not an amateur boxer. I was going to jail and I got bail and I started training. It shows the passion we put into this.

"For this guy to beat me tonight, it shows the levels of hard work he must have put in, so please give him a round of applause as heavyweight champion of world. They said that I'm not a 12-round fighter. I ain't 14 stone, I'm 18 stone, I'm heavy. It's hard work. This guy here is phenomenal."
