Fighter removed from UFC 269 having fallen ill after making weight

UFC flyweight Matt Schnell fell ill after making weight for UFC 269 and has since been removed from his early preliminary fight against Alex Perez.

Schnell was scheduled to take on Perez in the fourth bout of the evening and successfully weighed in for the fight at 126lbs.

His opponent Perez – who used to fight at bantamweight – weighed in shortly after, stepped on the scale a quarter of a pound too heavy.

But the former title challenger didn't need to cut the extra weight as UFC officials announced that Schnell had been forced out due to a “medical issue”

"Due to medical issues with Matt Schnell, his flyweight bout with Alex Perez has been cancelled from tomorrow’s card," a UFC statement read.

Schnell was fighting at flyweight for the first time since January, having competed at 135-pounds against Rogerio Bontorin at UFC 262 in May.

A former standout on The Ultimate Fighter, Schnell was signed to the UFC in 2017 but suffered defeat to Rob Front and Hector Sandoval in his first two fights for the promotion.

The 31-year-old – who has switched between bantamweight and flyweight during his UFC career – won four straight fights before his knockout loss to Alexandre Pantoja.

Schnell took over a year away from the cage due to the nature of the loss, returning in January when he outpointed Tyson Nam.

It's not the first time his fight with Perez has been cancelled, as the pair were supposed to fight in May but Perez pulled out for an undisclosed reason.

Schnell admitted earlier this year that Perez wasn't the opponent he wanted but was inclined to fight him after receiving a new UFC contract.

“Originally, when the Alex Perez fight was made, that wasn’t necessarily the fight that I wanted,” he told MMA Junkie.

“But I was up for a new contract, they offered me a new deal that I really liked, and when you sign a new deal, you take the fights they offer you. So we said yes to Alex Perez."

Schnell's fight with Perez was scheduled for two other events before being pushed back to UFC 269, with the new postponement marking the fourth time the fight has been scratched.

Only one other fighter missed weight at UFC 269 – women's flyweight Priscila Cachoeira – as she came in three pounds heavy for the opening fight on the card against Gillian Robertson.

Cachoeira will be fined 30% portion of her fight purse, which will go to her opponent Robertson.
