Frank Warren backs Carl Frampton to return to the ring in style with Traynor win

Saturday night is a big night for British sport and there is only going to be one winner: the fans.

The last British team left in the Champions League, Manchester City, will battle Lyon in the Quarter-Final live on BT Sport and then afterwards, Belfast hero Carl Frampton will return to the ring for the first time in nine months.

Carl has had a bad run of luck with injuries and opponents pulling out so tonight I expect to see him thrill a huge TV audience by taking his frustration out on Aberdeen scrapper Darren Traynor.

Carl was due to face American Jamel Herring for the WBO world championship in June before coronavirus KO’d that dream. That fight remains a realistic possibility for later this year but first ‘The Jackal’ must avoid a potential banana skin against the much bigger man in Traynor.

Earlier this week Carl said he was motivated by a desire to be seen as the best Irish fighter of all time, ahead of legendary names of the sport such as Steve Collins and Barry McGuigan.

Beating Jamel Herring and becoming a three-weight World Champion would cement that accolade for me, so I hope all British boxing fans are rooting for him tonight as he takes his first post-Lockdown steps towards achieving that goal.

Elsewhere on the card, there is a dizzying array of young British talent on show.

Undefeated Archie Sharp takes on Tottenham’s Jeff Ofori, Darlington’s Troy Williamson returns to the ring against Harry Scarff and 19-year-old super-prospect Dennis McCann will get another opportunity to impress on the big stage.

Dennis is a nailed-on future world champion as far as I’m concerned and has earned comparisons to someone I know very well, Prince Naseem Hamed. If you’ve not yet seen this kid fight, tune-in and I guarantee you’ll see something very special.

BT Sport Fight Night: Frampton vs Traynor is live tonight, coverage starts at 8pm on BT Sport 2
