Justin Gaethje dominated Tony Ferguson and scored a fifth round stoppage in a sensational performance to claim the interim UFC lightweight title and set up a clash with Khabib Nurmagomedov.
The Highlight looked superb throughout, landing numerous heavy punches with both hands, with Ferguson showing an iron chin to remain on his feet.
El Cucuy floored Gaethje with an uppercut at the end of the second round, but otherwise it was a dominant performance for the new champion who handed Ferguson his first defeat since 2012.
Gaethje was handed the interim title by UFC president Dana White but he threw it to the floor and set his sights on the lightweight champion Khabib.
‘I’ll wait for the real one,’ said the American as he dropped the belt on the floor.
‘I knew I was a killer stepping in here, I’m good bro. No better drug on Earth, adrenaline coursing through my veins. This is hard work, I’ve worked since I was four-years-old.
‘I have a world class coach, I had to lose to change, you can’t fix what’s not broken.
Ferguson appears to have lost his chance at the lightweight title, which he was supposed to get last month against Khabib, before the coronavirus crisis hit and wiped out that contest.
‘It’s been a long f*****g camp, we’ve been preparing since November,’ said El Cucuy.
‘Obviously it didn’t happen with Khabib and Justin was the only one who would sign on the dotted line.
‘Justin’s a tough son of a bitch. I’d rather have been finished than somebody step in’.
