- Pair messaged each other and appeared to agree to a clash on April 9
- Winner would have a seriously strong case for the next shot at Kamaru Usman
Gilbert Burns and Khamzat Chimaev appear to have agreed a massive welterweight fight on April 9.
Chimaev has been searching for a high-ranked opponent to take him on and it seems the Brazilian former title contender will be the man to accept the challenge.
At first, Burns wrote: ‘Let’s do this in May’, on a private Instagram chat later shared publicly.

Chimaev replied: ‘Let’s go champ’, before Burns then suggested April 9 as a possible date.
It remains to be seen whether the negotiations will be ironed out but given the will from both parties to make it happen, there should be few obstacles.
Burns is coming off a win over Stephen Thompson while Chimaev dominated Li Jingliang last year to take the hype surrounding him to another level.
Neither man has found it easy to find opponents but it seems they are a perfect match at the perfect time.
Burns, who lost to his former team-mate Kamaru Usman in his title shot last year, recently spoke about the possibility of facing Chimaev.
He told Combate: ‘I’m already in negotiations for my next fight. A lot of people did not accept (to fight me), so the negotiation has been a little more complicated.
‘I keep watching fights and when somebody in my division is fighting, I go crazy wishing that they would call me out, but nobody does. We’ll see when this next fight comes.
‘We’ve been negotiating, we’re looking at an April slot,’ Burns continued. ‘We’re just trying to establish an opponent.
‘It could be Chimaev. He’s one of the few guys who has accepted and we’re still negotiating. We’ll see. It could be him next.’
