McGregor’s trilogy fight with Poirier backed to be ‘bigger’ than Khabib bout

Conor McGregor’s trilogy fight with Dustin Poirier has the ‘potential’ to break the UFC pay-per-view record – making it even bigger than the Irishman’s bout with Khabib Nurmagomedov in 2018.

That’s according to Poirier’s coach, Mike Brown, who believes The Notorious is the “biggest draw” in the sport.

While that may be the case, McGregor couldn’t get the better of The Diamond in January, with the 32-year-old pulling off a surprise TKO victory in the second round to avenge his 2014 defeat.

The two fighters are now preparing to go at it for a third time at the T-Mobile Arena on July 10th, and Brown thinks the fight could receive record viewing figures.

"Yeah, this is the right choice [for Poirier]," Brown told MMA Junkie. “Conor is the biggest draw in this sport, and I think this well sell more pay-per-views than any other fight.

“This potentially will be the biggest pay-per-view of all time. It really has that capability, and it probably will. I believe that, and the title fight will always be there after.

“He’s still getting better all the time, and another guy who has paid his dues more than anyone. These are the guys that took the long road, the guys that deserve it more than anybody.”

The match-up between McGregor and Poirier will have to go some to top the viewing figures for the Irishman’s fight with Khabib at UFC 229.

2.9million people watched the Russian inflict a fourth career defeat on McGregor, making it the most watched UFC PPV event by some distance.

Poirier vs McGregor II and Diaz vs McGregor II are next on the list with 1.6million subscribers apiece, with McGregor vs Cerrone attracting 1.35million viewers.
