Mike Tyson has been accused of rape in a lawsuit filed by a woman in New York State this week.
The alleged victim has claimed that the attack took place in the early 1990s after her and Tyson and met in the the Septembers club in Albany, according to a report by an ABC affiliate. The $5million (£4million) lawsuit was filed in Albany County Court on January 5.
She said an incident between the pair then occurred in a limousine. According to the alleged victim, the former unified heavyweight boxing world champion 'started to touch' and 'attempted to kiss' her after she got inside his vehicle, despite her claiming she had refused his advances.
“My friend and I were hanging out with him and his limousine driver,” the woman wrote in an affidavit with details published by the Mail. “Tyson told us about a party and asked us to join him. My friend was going to drop off her car and Tyson said he would pick her up in the limousine.
“I told him no several times and asked him to stop, but he continued to attack me,” she said. “He then pulled my pants off and violently raped me.”
The woman claims that the alleged attack has left her with “physical, psychological and emotional injuries." She argued she desired to remain anonymous because exposing her identify: “would certainly pose a risk to me of further mental harm, harassment, ridicule or personal embarrassment.”
She filed her lawsuit thanks to New York’s Adult Survivors Act, which gives victims of sexual assault a one-year window to raise allegations of sexual assault in court. That applies even if, as in this case, the allegations related to decades ago.
In July 1991, Tyson was arrested for the rape of 18-year-old Desiree Washington, in an Indianapolis hotel room. He was subsequently found guilty in February 1992, and sentenced to six years in prison along with four years of probation.
He was released in March 1995 after serving less than three years of the sentence, and immediately returned to professional boxing. He fought just five months after his release, beating Peter McNeeley in Las Vegas.
