‘Oh my god’: Boxing stupidity strikes again

Believe it or not, it’s happened again.

Boxing never fails to disappoint with the judges’ scorecards and it struck once more on Sunday afternoon (AEDT) during Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s blockbuster fight against Callum Smith.

Alvarez dismantled his opponent in a 12-round masterclass, but despite every fan and commentator seeing it as a one-sided display, one judge ringside wasn’t as convinced in the whitewash.

Two judges handed Smith the sixth round for his only victory of the 12-round fight that took place in Texas and saw Alvarez unify the WBA and WBC Super Middleweight titles.

However, the third judge’s scorecard captured the attention of social media and veteran boxing journalist Dan Rafael.

Judge Steve Morrow somehow handed Smith the fifth, sixth and seventh rounds for a scorecard of 117-111 in favour of Alvarez. His card had no bearing on the final result, but it’s the latest in a long line of questionable judges’ scorecards that have left fans fuming.

“Scorecard from #CaneloSmith. Judge Steve Morrow actually gave Smith three rounds in a row. Wasn‘t sure if that should be “OMG!!!!!!!!!” or ”LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!,” Rafael tweeted.

Alvarez was so dismissive of Smith during their fight he stood up and refused to sit down between rounds.

The pound-for-pound king shone throughout and after some early Smith flurries, his power and skill prevailed.

During intervals of the later stages, Alvarez calmly walked around, chatted away and looked relaxed in the corner.

It was a sign of how confident the now four-weight division world champion was in the Alamodome, San Antonio.

Pay-per-view TV viewers were quick to point out and spot Canelo’s antics on social media. One said: “Canelo doesn‘t look like he’s in a fight. Barely broken a sweat. All standing up in his corner.”

Another added: “Canelo Alvarez is standing up between the round rd 12 instead resting.”

And one commented: “Not a mark on Canelo, standing up between rounds. Have to say Canelo is the best out there.

“Smith had a lot of heart just not in his league.”
