Paulo Costa has poked fun at the furore surrounding his unusual excuse for losing to Israel Adesanya at UFC 253, claiming that ‘sober Costa’ is still undefeated after insisting that he was feeling the effects of a bottle of wine on the eve of the fight.
The Brazilian, 29, entered his middleweight title bout with the champion having not suffered defeat in his 13 fights in mixed martial arts, presenting the biggest challenge to Adesanya to date.
However, the Nigerian-born New Zealander made the title hopeful look second best in an impeccable striking display in Abu Dhabi, securing a second-round TKO to cement his status as the man to beat at 185 pounds.
Paulo Costa has poked fun at his claim that he was drunk before his UFC 253 title fight
Costa, 29, said he drunk a bottle of wine the night before his one-sided loss to Israel Adesanya
Costa had mysteriously claimed that he had encountered an issue before the bout, and clarified this week that the consumption of a bottle of wine to aid his sleep was the reason behind his lethargic display.
‘I was a little drunk when I fought. Maybe I had a little hangover,’ he admitted in a video on his own Youtube channel.
‘It was my fault and I don’t blame anyone else for it. It was something I chose myself, but I had to sleep because I hadn’t done it in the last 24 hours.
‘I drank wine. Lots of wine. A whole bottle of wine to fall asleep. I had one drink and it didn’t work. Two drinks and it didn’t work. Half the bottle and it didn’t work. And in the end I drank it all.’
Costa attributed his sluggish display to his late night drinking as he struggled to fall asleep
The previously unbeaten Brazilian insisted on Twitter that his ‘sober’ self remains undefeated
And having received backlash for his comments, Costa has taken to Twitter to poke fun at his puzzling excuse.
‘Sober Costa is still undefeated’, the Brazilian tweeted alongside an emoji of a glass of red wine.
A host of fighters, including Adesanya, have hit out at the 29-year-old following his revelation this week.
‘Just swallow your ego. You got your a** whooped,’ the middleweight king told MMA Junkie. ‘Get back to the drawing board and reassess your whole game. You can’t just rest on that because if you do – this is my advice – you’ll never get far in life, or in this game.’

Former middleweight champion Luke Rockhold was more scathing in his review of Costa’s comments.
‘Paulo Costa that guy is just annoying, stupid. Talking about getting drunk off wine is just the dumbest thing I’ve ever f*****g heard,’ Rockhold told Submission Radio.
‘Shut up and stop making excuses like that, that is just far-fetched. Pretty dumb, pretty f*****g dumb.’
Adesanya attempts to become a two-weight world champion as he takes on light heavyweight champion Jan Blachowicz at UFC 259 in Las Vegas.
