What Tony Ferguson said before being transported to hospital after UFC 249

Tony Ferguson has expressed his disappointment with his performance against Justin Gaethje. The Ultimate Fighter season 13 winner locked horns with the former World Series of Fighting lightweight champion in the early hours of Sunday morning in the main event of UFC 249.

Ferguson’s showdown with Gaethje, which took place in Jacksonville, Florida, was for the interim lightweight title, a belt that was once in his possession.

‘El Cucuy’ failed in his bid to reclaim the title he was stripped of in April 2018, suffering a fifth-round TKO loss to an imperious Gaethje.

Ferguson was dominated from start to finish but showed tremendous spirit and a granite chin.

A disappointed Ferguson reflected on his first defeat in eight years during his post-fight interview, in which he was quick to Gaethje his dues.

“A long camp,” Ferguson told veteran commentator Joe Rogan when asked to reflect on the defeat “The weight cut had nothing to do with it.

“Justin’s a tough son of a b***h, I’ll be real. I prepared for Khabib; not too much of a striker. But s**t happens, man. What can you do?”

Despite taking an unfathomable amount of punishment, Ferguson isn’t happy with the decision of referee Herb Dean to step in and call a halt to proceedings.

He added: “I would’ve much rather got finished instead of having somebody step in.”

Ferguson is keen to one day run it back with Gaethje, who will likely face Nurmagomedov in a summer unification bout.

“Let’s go back and get it on, you now what I mean?” he said when asked what’s next for him. “The consolation round you have to win back.

“Props to Justin, like I said, and his team; tough son of a b***h. Thank you for taking the fight.”

Shortly after conducting his post-fight interview, Ferguson was transported hospital for further medical treatment.
