Fired-up Instagram sensation tears golf brat to shreds

Bryson DeChambeau is the talk of the golf world this year but not always for the right reasons.

The American has bulked up big time, using lockdown to add some serious muscle to his frame and develop the longest drive on tour. But the man nicknamed the “Mad Scientist” has also shown he has a short fuse to go with his beefy biceps.

Playing at the Memorial Tournament in Ohio last weekend, DeChambeau lost his cool with rules officials when he shot a 10 on the par-5 15th. One of his many errant shots ended up under a metal fence and was deemed out of bounds, but he was filthy and disputed the “garbage” call, asking for a second ruling.

It was clear to everyone the rules officials were right and the decision stood.

Earlier this month at the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit, DeChambeau blew up at a cameraman for filming him after he bogeyed the sixth hole, complaining about “showing a potential vulnerability” and “hurting someone’s image”.

This behaviour hasn’t gone down well with former pro golfer turned Instagram sensation Paige Spiranac, who accused DeChambeau of buying into his own hype and believing he’s bigger than the game.

“I used to be a big Bryson fan. I was all in on Bryson … I thought he was doing things that were different, innovative and he is who he is, and I respect that,” Spiranac said on the latest episode of her podcast Playing-A-Round.

“But in the last few weeks it’s been really hard to be a Bryson fan. He’s crossed that line from being different to being a d**k.

“The way he acted to that rules official was so uncalled for and I think it just shows where his headspace is at right now, where he thinks that he is literally pioneering the way that golf is being played, and he is so far and beyond everyone else that he can tell a rules official, whose job is to know the rules inside and out … ‘I don’t believe you, I need a second ruling’.

“Who do you think you are? Seriously, who do you think you are?

“You know the rules for OB (out of bounds). We have played it from junior golf to college golf to pro golf. It has never changed.”

Spiranac said even though DeChambeau was fuming about playing such a shocking hole on the 15th at Memorial, that’s no excuse for the way he treated the officials.

She also said if he was going to behave like a spoiled brat, it’s obvious why he’d complain about having cameras on him.

“For him to act so shocked and as if it was against him personally, I was not OK with that,” Spiranac said.

“You can be frustrated, and I understand tempers are running hot, especially when you’re making a big number and you’re compounding your problems, but to not even say thankyou to either of those rules officials (is poor form).

“And then the most shocking thing on top of this, he said he wanted to jump the fence and play it from the other side. What was he going to hit, from a metal fence?

“Bryson was so condescending towards the rules official, it wasn’t cool. Now I can see why he doesn’t want cameras on him, cos he’s a d**k.

“Of course you’re not going to want cameras around you when you’re acting like that and your true colours come out.

“It’s crazy that he would do that.”
