College Football Playoff management committee to consider expanding to a 12-team bracket

The College Football Playoff is taking a significant step toward expanding from four to 12 teams.

After acknowledging in April that it would consider different playoff models, the CFP management committee is expected to announce Thursday that it will consider a 12-team bracket, a person with knowledge of the plan told USA TODAY Sports. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to do so publicly.

The recommended format, which has been proposed by a subcommittee of the CFP's managers, the person said, would include the six highest-ranked conference champions and six at-large teams, with early-round games played on campus sites. The top four seeds would get first-round byes.

Bill Hancock, the CFP’s executive director, has previously stated that any changes to the format would not take place before the 2023 season.

The 10 FBS conference commissioners are meeting next week in Chicago to discuss the format proposal, and if they move it forward, it would then have to be approved by the presidents and chancellors on the CFP’s board of directors at a meeting later in June.
