College Football Playoff ranking release dates & more to know about the 2020 CFP selection process

The day after the Big Ten and Pac-12 canceled their fall football seasons, College Football Playoff executive director Bill Hancock told Sporting News he was “hopeful” there would be a four-team playoff in 2020-21.

As of now, the playoff is on. Six FBS conferences and three independent schools make up the 76 schools that will compete for those four spots.

The CFP announced the dates for its rankings, and the plan now is to move forward with a College Football Playoff. Here are the important dates and locations to know for 2020-21:

How will the College Football Playoff work in 2020?

Is the College Football Playoff still legitimate? The answer appears to be yes despite the fact 54 FBS schools are not playing in 2020-21. The Big Ten, MAC, Mountain West and Pac-12 canceled their football seasons because of concerns with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic in the United States.

That leaves three Power 5 conferences and three Group of 5 conferences. There is precedent. The 2017-18 CFP featured two teams from the SEC (Alabama, Georgia) the Big 12 champion (Oklahoma) and the ACC champion (Clemson).

When are the CFP rankings released?

The first set of College Football Playoff rankings will be on Tuesday, Nov. 17.

The rankings schedule for 2020 is as follows:

This is the seventh year of the College Football Playoff, so the semifinals are back at their original spots at the Rose Bowl Game in Pasadena, Calif.; and Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. Those games are scheduled for Jan. 1.

Where is the CFP championship game in 2020?

This year’s College Football Championship game is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 11, at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla.
