NBC Sports will be adding two prominent additions to its Football Night in America show this year.
The network announced on Monday that Drew Brees and Maria Taylor will join the show that precedes NBC’s Sunday Night Football game.
Brees will be at the Studio 1 desk with Mike Tirico and Tony Dungy providing analysis during the show, while Taylor will co-host the show and will be paired with Chris Simms in Studio 1, the release said. As part of the move, Rodney Harrison will move to the field of the Sunday Night Football games to work with co-host Jac Collinsworth.
This will be the first season Brees will not suit up for football games after he announced that the 2020 NFL season would be his last in the league. Brees had already agreed to a deal with NBC to join the team in April 2020, a few months before he retired.
For Taylor, this will be her first season primarily working NFL coverage for NBC instead of college football for ESPN. Taylor had been a focal point of ESPN’s College Gameday coverage, but she left the network after she couldn’t reach a new deal with ESPN. Her exit also followed reports that fellow ESPN reporter Rachel Nichols made disparaging comments saying that Taylor hosted the 2020 NBA Finals coverage because the network lacked diversity.
This will be the latest major assignment Taylor has had for NBC. She was also hosting NBC’s coverage of the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.
