Geno Hayes, a 2008 draft pick for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, has died at age 33.
The former NFL linebacker recently entered hospice care, having fought liver disease for two years.
The Buccaneers selected Hayes with a sixth-round pick in the 2008 NFL Draft out of Florida State.
Tampa Bay released a statement on Hayes’ passing on Tuesday:
We are deeply saddened to learn of Geno Hayes’ passing. During his time with the Buccaneers, Geno was a beloved teammate and often the first player to volunteer his time to our efforts in the community. He frequently visited schools and had a remarkable ability to connect with children. Losing him at such a young age is heartbreaking. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.
Hayes last played with the Jaguars in 2014. He also spent time with the Bears.
He was a 2007 All-ACC first team selection with Florida State.
