RedBox Bowl becomes first college football bowl game to be canceled in 2020

The RedBox Bowl has earned the dubious honor of being the first bowl game to be officially canceled for 2020.

Since 2014, the RedBox Bowl has matched opponents from the Big Ten and Pac-12. Begun as the San Francisco Bowl in 2002, the bowl game was played at the home of baseball's San Francisco Giants until 2013 before moving in 2014 to Levi’s Stadium —  home of the NFL's San Francisco 49ers — in Santa Clara, California.

Though it’s considered a minor date on the postseason calendar, it likely won’t be the first casualty of the college football season that will be highly unusual because of the coronavirus pandemic.

“While it’s unfortunate that we are unable to stage the 19th iteration of the Bay Area’s Bowl game this December, I’m confident that the Bowl property, along with the entire live sports, events and tourism industry, will be in a healthier position next year, and we can’t wait to welcome new college football teams and fans back to the San Francisco Bay Area in 2021,” said RedBox Bowl executive director Ryan Oppelt in a statement.
