The World Series opener went to the Dodgers, but the Rays come back for Game 2 with 2018 Cy Young winner Blake Snell on the mound. Despite that, our DraftKings Showdown lineup again goes with no pitching for the second straight day. Instead, we’re stacking our lineup with Dodgers’ righthanded bats, led by Mookie Betts, against Snell.
The L.A. pitching plan for Game 2 is less certain. Righthander Tony Gonsolin will start, but he threw 41 pitches in NLCS Game 7 and has had two days rest. It will likely be a bullpen game for L.A., which is not something worth investing in, either.
DraftKings Showdown Picks: Dodgers vs. Rays Game 2
Captain (1.5x price, 1.5x points): OF Mookie Betts, Dodgers ($16,500)
Picking the top-priced player on the slate to captain our lineup does put us in a bit of a bind for picking the rest of the lineup. Using Betts means we can’t use Corey Seager, Cody Bellinger, or Max Muncy, but against the lefty Blake Snell, that might be OK. Betts is 7-for-23 with three extra-base hits off Snell from Betts’ time with the Red Sox, and coming off a Game 1 homer, Betts might be in for another big ball game.
FLEX: C Will Smith, Dodgers ($8,200)
Smith delivered a key run-scoring single for the Dodgers in Game 1, and he’ll move back behind the plate after DHing in the series opener. That will likely be a pleasant return to routine for a player who only DHed three times during the regular season.
FLEX: 2B Chris Taylor, Dodgers ($7,000)
Taylor flies under the radar relative to the Dodgers’ big bats, but he pretty consistently puts up solid games. He went 2-for-3 with a walk in Game 1, and he’ll be right back in there for Game 2 with the platoon advantage.
FLEX: 1B Ji-Man Choi, Rays ($6,800)
Choi didn’t start Game 1 with a lefty on the mound, but he’ll be back in the heart of the Rays’ order for Game 2. His OPS in the postseason is greater than .900, and he consistently puts up competitive at-bats with some power against top-end pitching. That should be the case again Wednesday.
FLEX: OF Austin Meadows, Rays ($5,800)
There’s no way around it — Meadows has had a terrible year. But he hit 33 home runs a year ago, and Kevin Cash will count on him with the righty Gonsolin on the hill to start Game 2. Meadows might not get three hits, but all we need is one big one.
FLEX: OF Enrique Hernandez, Dodgers ($5,600)
We saw Hernandez with a big, pinch-hit home run in Game 7 of the NLCS, and he pinch-hit again in Game 1 of the World Series once a lefty was on the mound. Check to be sure, but Hernandez should start against Snell. Hernandez is a noted lefty-killer in his career, and his cheap price is worth it with a favorable matchup.
