Formula 1 hero Fernando Alonso is in hospital after being hit by a car while cycling in Switzerland, according to Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport.
The Spaniard is said to have been hit while riding his bike in Lugano, training with the Alpine F1 team.
Alonso has suffered possible fractures and may now miss the start of the 2021 season.
“Alpine F1 Team can confirm that Fernando Alonso has been involved in a road accident while cycling in Switzerland,” the team confirmed in a statement on Thursday.
“Fernando is conscious and well in himself and is awaiting further medical examinations tomorrow morning.
“Alpine F1 Team will not make any further statement at this point in time. Further updates will be given tomorrow.”
The two-time F1 champion is due to have more examinations on Friday.
Alonso is due to make his comeback to Formula 1 this year with the Alpine team, previously known as Renault.
The 39-year-old set up the team last year, securing sponsorship for five years from the UAE.
However, speaking last year the former Ferrari driver admitted it had not been easy.
“It did not go ahead with Euskaltel and creating a team of our own,” Alonso told journalist Kiko García.

“It worked properly and we followed all the right steps but it was a dead-end tunnel. Creating a team of the UCI WorldTour is not easy or cheap.
“You have to have important economic support. We had meetings with the Government of the UAE who came close to entering the project. In the end, they worked with other teams in the current peloton.”
