F1 leader Max Verstappen told he has ‘not matured’ after crash with Hamilton

F1 legend Sir Jackie Stewart has slammed current title leader Max Verstappen following the latest dramatic crash with rival Lewis Hamilton at the Italian Grand Prix.

Seven-time world champion Hamilton had exited the pit lane when his Red Bull rival came speeding down the main straight at Monza and attempted to overtake on the outside.

But seconds later, the drama reached boiling point as both cars collided with each other, before Verstappen's Red Bull lifted up off the kerb and landed on top of Hamilton's car – with the Brit saved from potentially serious injuries from his halo.

Verstappen made it very clear that he thought Hamilton was at fault, storming off back to his garage after his race came to the end, but the Brit certainly disagreed and it was the Red Bull star who has since been handed a three-place grid penalty at next weekend's Russian Grand Prix in Sochi.

And now with aftermath of the incident calming down, three-time world champion Stewart said Verstappen still has plenty to learn within the sport.

'Verstappen is taking longer than expected to mature,” Stewart told the Daily Mail.

'Not even to go to see Hamilton after a serious accident when you have just driven over the top of the guy is something I don’t really understand.

'Especially when he is still in his car and remained there for a long time before getting out. Max has quite a lot to learn. But who will he listen to?

'He’s very, very good. He’s probably the fastest driver on the grid now, but to be a proper champion you cannot be entangling yourself in crashes all the time.'

Stewart went onto argue that he believes the championship battle will go right to the very end, with Verstappen holding a slender five-point lead heading into the Sochi race next weekend.

However, he couldn't resist another swipe at Verstappen, claiming he is still in the 'puppy stage' of his F1 career.

When asked specifically who he reckons will come out on top come the end of the season, Stewart told talkSPORT: 'I think they (Mercedes) have the best package at the moment, but Red Bull have really shown themselves to be hot.'

He added: 'I think it will be between both of them. Verstappen, I think now is the fastest driver in the business, but is still slightly in the puppy stage.

'At the same time, Lewis may be approaching the end of his career in Formula 1, so I think the future holds more in the Verstappen field. But don’t count out Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton is an extremely good driver.'
