F1 qualifying results in full as Lewis Hamilton dominates in pouring rain
Lewis Hamilton proved to the rain master at the Red Bull Ring, taking pole position on a soaking wet track in Austria.
The reigning world champion was over a second ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen who spun at the last corner on his final flying lap.
The big surprise was Carlos Sainz who put his McLaren onto the second row of the grid, just ahead of Mercedes driver – and last week's race winner – Valtteri Bottas.
The hour-long Saturday session had been delayed by 45 minutes due to torrential rain which had also caused the cancellation of the morning’s practice session.
Once the cars were out on track, it was Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton who set the fastest time of the first session which was ended 13 second early after Alfa Romeo’s Antonio Giovinazzi spun into the barriers at turn three.
The wet weather also allowed Williams’ George Russell show his pedigree by getting into Q2 for the first time in his career.
The second 15-minute-long session saw a Ferrari fall to the wayside for the second successive week, only this time it was Charles Leclerc.
Q3 was the wettest of all three sessions, and it was Hamilton – who so often revels in the wet – who made the best of the conditions to secure pole position.
Behind the front row, it was a good session for McLaren with Carlos Sainz and Lando Norris setting the third and sixth fastest times respectively.
However Norris, who scored his first podium finish in last weekend's Austrian Grand Prix, will start ninth after picking up a three-place grid penalty.
