Red Bull boss Helmut Marko has claimed Max Verstappen could win the championship within just two or three races.  Marko said: “The good thing is we don’t have to win every race. If we see we can’t win, okay, we go for points.

“There are still eight races to go. I believe we have to win two or three more to be safe in the Championship.” Verstappen could win the title as early as the Singapore Grand Prix if he wins the next three races and Perez and Leclerc fail to score.

The Red Bull star could also claim his second crown in Japan if he wins the next four races with Perez second and Leclerc third. The reigning champion clinched his ninth win of the campaign on Sunday while Leclerc struggled.

The Ferrari star looked on course to finish P5 before a time penalty issued after the race saw him demoted to sixth. Verstappen also clinched the fastest lap of the race meaning he extended his gap to the Monegasque by another 18 points.

The Dutchman can almost afford to retire from four races and still be ahead in the title race. However, team principal Christian Horner has refused to get carried away despite the huge lead in both championships.

He explained: “It’s encouraging, but you can never allow yourself to think too far ahead. It’s about the next race in Zandvoort and then the next race the weekend after in Monza. The whole team, the trackside team back in the factory, every single department is doing their bit. It’s what enables us to have a car and the kind of performance we had.”

Verstappen’s team-mate Sergio Perez even moved ahead of Leclerc in the drivers’ standings by five points as the Scuderia’s difficult run continued.

Red Bull now also enjoys a 118-point advantage over Ferrari in the Constructors’ Championship. Verstappen also tried to lower expectations after his win in Spa despite his comfortable position at this stage of the season.

He commented: “Now we need to keep on working hard and focus on each race ahead of us. We know that we have to finish every race, we don’t need to win every race but we want to as a team. Let’s see what we can do in Zandvoort.”
