Jimmie Johnson loses control, crashes just before potential Stage 1 win at Darlington

Jimmie Johnson held a lead at the end of the first stage of NASCAR’s Real Heroes 400 race at Darlington on Sunday before losing control of his car.

Johnson touched the back of Chris Buescher’s No. 17 car and spun into the opposite wall. The crash ended his day.

Johnson was dismayed at the way his promising afternoon ended, feeling he wasted a chance at a strong result in the sport’s return amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“Gosh, what I would do to get that corner back,” Johnson said.

William Byron pushed ahead to win Stage 1 after Johnson’s crash.

Johnson entered Sunday in fifth place in the Cup Series standings with two top-10 finishes in his first four races.
