Lewis Hamilton contract: Mercedes owners must forget George Russell after blocking deal

Sports Personality of the Year: Lewis Hamilton receives award

Lewis Hamilton has yet to sign a contract for Mercedes with the 2021 F1 season on the horizon. Hamilton won his seventh world championship last year to match the great Michael Schumacher.

Despite that reports have claimed Mercedes owners Daimler are said to have blocked an offer to the 35-year-old.

Hamilton was set to be offered a four-year contract but with the emergence of George Russell, they are said to want a shorter-term deal.

Russell stepped into the Mercedes for the Sakhir Grand Prix following Hamilton’s positive coronavirus test.

The 22-year-old who drives for Williams looked like winning the race on two occasions.

A calamitous Mercedes pit stop and a puncture left Russell down the field though he did recover to ninth and achieved the fastest lap of the race.

That is said to have made the Silver Arrows hesitant to offer Hamilton a long-term deal.

Frankly, this is wrong.

Hamilton has proven in 2020 he is better than he has ever been before by the scale of his championship win.

He pummelled team-mate Valtteri Bottas, finishing 124 points clear of the Finn.

On weekends where he failed to put the Mercedes on pole position, he would come back to win on a Sunday more often than not.

Hamilton has underlined his talents by breaking record after record and the signs are he will only get faster in the coming years despite his age.

Russell is without doubt one to watch but there is only one man he should replace at Mercedes.

That is Bottas. The Finn was unlucky in 2020 but there can simply be no excuses for how far behind Hamilton he was in the end.

Russell dominated him for the entire Sakhir Grand Prix weekend other than in qualifying.

Mercedes should offer Hamilton whatever he wants and ensure their dominance in the sport for years to come.

Even with the 2021 regulation changes the talent he possesses will ensure the Silver Arrows compete at the very top.

Daimler are wrong in wanting a short-term deal.

As long as Hamilton is hungry, offer him whatever he wants and let F1 fans continue to watch the greatest of all-time in action.

There is simply no way anyone will get near him in 2021 with 23 races scheduled.
