Lewis Hamilton contract: Toto Wolff warning, George Russell boost, Mercedes tactic stance

F1: Lewis Hamilton goes for a seaside run

Lewis Hamilton’s contract saga continues to be the talking point of Formula One. The Brit is technically a free agent for the time being, with his old deal recently expiring. So Express Sport will bring you all the latest news and information on the 36-year-old’s future.

Toto Wolff warning

Toto Wolff has warned Mercedes they must be ready for ‘curveballs’ amid their delay in tying Hamilton down.

“It doesn’t worry me at all, because I will always respect Lewis’s decisions,” he told Autosport.com.

“Whether this is staying with us for a long time, or whether that means leaving the sport and pursuing different interests.

“I think we need to be ready for all kinds of curveballs being thrown at us.

“But at the same time, we talk a lot, and we are very transparent with each other. I think there is more to achieve together.”

George Russell boost

George Russell moving to Mercedes ‘would suit Williams’, according to reports.

Beyond The Flag say the 22-year-old jumping ship would benefit the Williams brand now that Claire Williams is no longer serving as deputy team principal.

She made it clear Russell was under contract with the team throughout 2021, and that Mercedes would have to wait another 12 months to land their man.

However, Williams have since been purchased by Dorilton Capital.

And with Claire Williams no longer calling the shots, it’s possible that Russell will be granted a move away.

Mercedes happy with tactic

Regarding Hamilton’s contract, Crash.net claim the Silver Arrows are happy for the process to be undertaken in private.

That’s because they feel it removes any pressure brought on by arbitrary deadlines – giving them control over negotiations.

It’s been reported that the 36-year-old has four contract demands.

But Express Sport understands that isn’t the case.

Mercedes are still optimistic they’ll keep hold of Hamilton, despite the Brit previously holding talks over a move to Ferrari.

Wolff hails Hamilton

Also in his interview with Autosport, Wolff hailed Hamilton’s driving skills – insisted they, and not the Mercedes vehicle, was behind his F1 success.

“It’s not one dimensional,” the 48-year-old added.

“Formula 1 has always been about best man in best machine wins.

“The best man means the quickest driver, and the most intelligent driver.

“[He is] the one that understands how the dynamics in a team works, its technical ability, and on the other side seeing himself in the right context within the organisation and not like a solar system where everything revolves around the sun.”
