Gary Lineker and Piers Morgan have led the furious responses to the way in which Max Verstappen beat Lewis Hamilton to be crowned the 2021 Formula One Drivers' World Champion.

They were among thousands to take to Twitter after the controversial season-ender in Abu Dhabi, during which Red Bull's Verstappen was handed the chance to overlap Hamilton on the final lap following a safety car.

Hamilton led the race from first corner until the penultimate lap, with Mercedes left furious that lapped cars were allowed to overtake the safety car and give Verstappen a clear run at his rival.

Hamilton therefore missed out on a record eighth world title, as fresh tyres helped Verstappen, which would've seen him surpass the total he currently holds alongside Michael Schumacher.

Morgan wrote: "I don't know what I've just watched but it can't be right. Hamilton's been robbed, surely?"

With Lineker adding: "What a joke. That stinks."

Their anger came after Mercedes new boy George Russell lashed out at the "unacceptable nature" in which the season was decided on the final lap of the final race.

He said: "THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE!!!! Max is an absolutely fantastic driver who has had an incredible season and I have nothing but huge respect for him, but what just happened is absolutely unacceptable.

"I cannot believe what we’ve just seen."

A large chunk of the F1 community online shared that discontent, with one fan writing: "That has to be the biggest fix I've ever seen in 40 years of sport."

With a second adding: "That has fix written all over it Pouting face #AbuDhabiGP congratulations Lewis Hamilton. True champion."

A third continued: "It was a fix. They deliberately did what they did to give Max the title. Cheated Lewis out of it. Made the rules up at the end."

With a fourth saying: "Absolutely fix. Well done Lewis Hamilton what an unbelievable sportsman you are. Don't get the respect you deserve."

Despite his disappointment, Hamilton reacted differently to his fans online and congratulated his rival.

He said: "Firstly, congratulations to Max and to his team," Hamilton said moments after losing out.

"I think we did an amazing job this year. My team, everyone back at the factory, have worked so hard this whole year, it's been the most difficult of seasons. I'm so proud of them and I'm so grateful to be a part of the journey with them.

"This last part of the season we gave it absolutely everything and never gave up."
