Lewis Hamilton unlikely to ever match Max Verstappen feat despite seven titles
Lewis Hamilton previews Las Vegas Grand Prix
World Champion Max Verstappen is gunning for an incredible 18th Grand Prix win of the season in Las Vegas this weekend. But while the Dutchman has still got some way to go before he can match the achievements of the sport’s all-time greats he is setting records all of his own already.
No man has won more Formula One titles in the history of the sport than Verstappen’s rival Lewis Hamilton who shares a record haul of seven with the great Michael Schumacher. Even all-time greats like Alain Prost and the late Aryton Senna can not match the numbers put on the board by the British and German drivers.
That said, Verstappen is well on his way to F1 immortality already. With three world titles to his name so far, the Red Bull driver sits level with Senna, Jack Brabham, Jackie Stewart, Niki Lauda and Nelson Piquet. Esteemed company indeed.
One more title would pull this year’s champion level with Prost and Sebastian Vettel, but although it will take an absolute minimum of four years for Verstappen to level Hamilton and Schumacher’s tally, he is likely to have already set one record himself that is never likely to be beaten and still has the chance to grow bigger.
Not content with just winning this year’s F1 world championship, Verstappen his completely dominated it. Having won 17 of the 20 races so far this season, he has amassed a record 524 points with two races still to be contested.
Should he win both of them whilst recording the fastest lap in each, he will take that record tally to a staggering 576.
A quick look at the history books confirms that the chances of such a total ever being bettered are pretty slim. The previous highest total was held by someone Verstappen knows all too well – himself. Last year he romped to his second world title with a beefy 454 points, leaving the rest of the field in his wake.

The best total posted by Hamilton was during his 2019 championship-winning season when the Mercedes driver scored 413 points with 11 Grand Prix victories.
The Brit could return to the summit, should his car improve, and land a record eighth world title in the future, but it seems pretty far-fetched to suggest that if he did so it would involve a points total anything like what Verstappen has achieved this year.
