Nicholas Latifi loses F1 fans’ sympathy after salty Nyck de Vries verdict

Regular Williams driver Nicholas Latifi was embarrassingly upstaged by super-sub Nyck de Vries at last weekend’s Italian Grand Prix.

De Vries, who had driven Sebastian Vettel’s Aston Martin in the first practice session at Monza, was called up by Williams at late notice on Saturday to replace Alex Albon, who had been diagnosed with appendicitis.

Despite that, the Dutchman out-qualified Latifi and reached Q2 before finishing ninth in the race and picking up two points, with Latifi, who remains pointless, trailing in 15th.

De Vries is now one of the favourites to replace Latifi – best-known for the crash which led to the safety car at last year’s infamous Abu Dhabi Grand Prix – full-time for 2023. De Vries is also attracting interest from Alpine, who are looking for a new driver after losing Fernando Alonso and Oscar Piastri.

Meanwhile, Latifi’s future in the sport looks bleak, with some fans even calling for De Vries to replace him for the rest of this season. It remains to be seen if Albon will be fit for the next race in Singapore next month after suffering complications following the operation to remove his appendix.

Latifi has attracted more ridicule for his reaction to De Vries’s drive at Monza, which he seemed to put down to straight-line speed of the Williams.

Speaking in the media pen after the race, he was reminded that De Vries had finished in the top 10 and said: “That’s where the car should have finished. Again, we just lost six, seven positions at the start.

“If we were up front, the car had the pace to stay up front but our car has never been a car to race and attack with. It’s stay where you are and use our straight-line speed to defend, that’s all it is.”

Latifi’s response was criticised by some fans on social media, with one saying: “If there ever was any sympathy for him, this is where he lost all of it. Hope not to see him again. He made a career of being last and feels no shame, he is lost forever.”

Another added: “He's right the car should be there and I'm sure Albon would have executed a similar race to De Vries. Imagine how embarrassed Latifi must be, he knows his F1 career is over and his talent justifies the ejection. All he has to show for 3 years is ironic goat memes. What a legacy.”

A third said: “He is actually not totally wrong but giving no credit to Nyck really shows how upset he is with the situation. Albon would've destroyed Goatifi too but that is sort of expected. Latifi should have beaten De Vries comfortably. His career is 100% over, Williams cannot cover for him anymore.”
