Nico Rosberg has chosen his Formula 1 GOAT between former teammates Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher. The German was teammates of both drivers, although his relationship with Hamilton deteriorated as the strain of competing for world titles took its toll.

Rosberg partnered Schumacher at Mercedes when the German came out of retirement for three seasons between 2010 and 2012, and he famously teamed up with Hamilton at the Silver Arrows between 2013 and 2016.

Rosberg therefore had the unique opportunity to race and compete alongside a pair of seven-time world champions.

When asked to pick between the two, Rosberg suggested Hamilton is likely better in terms of natural talent – but the biggest difference between the two was that Schumacher was more industrious as he sought perfection in his craft.

“Lewis has an amazing natural talent,” Rosberg told Motorsport-Total.com.

“If we look at talent, he’s probably the best of all time. And he really builds on that, that instinct is phenomenal with him.

“A big difference is diligence. Lewis hates test drives. He doesn’t like test drives. And Michael, he would drive tests every day, even though he is a seven-time world champion. But because he also knows that you can always learn a little bit there.

“Oh well, I’m not so emotionally attached to it now that I say, ‘Hey, Michael actually deserved to hold the record’. Lewis deserves it too and if he manages to do that, then good.

“I see it more and more as, ‘He was really damn fast, and I can be all the more proud that I beat him with the same car back then.”

Hamilton won his record 100th Grand Prix at the Russian Grand Prix in Sochi last month, and he currently has nine race wins more than Schumacher in second.

The 52-year-old is one of F1’s greatest drivers ever, winning two championships for Benneton in 1994 and 1995 before sealing five in a row for Ferrari between 2000 and 2004.

After originally retiring in 2006, the German returned for a second F1 stint with Mercedes between 2010 and 2012 – where he was replaced at the Silver Arrows by none other than Hamilton.

Schumacher’s son Mick is currently enjoying – or enduring – his debut season in F1 with the Haas team.

While he is stuck in a tremendously uncompetitive car, the rookie has impressed at times and has consistently outperformed his teammate Nikita Mazepin.

Formula 1 returns to Texas for the United States Grand Prix on October 24, with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen holding a slender six-point lead over Hamilton.
