Daniel Ricciardo narrowly escaped a flying tyre after a chaotic opening lap crash in the Brazilian Grand Prix.
The race was suspended following the dramatic collision that ended the races of both Haas’ Kevin Magnussen and Williams’ Alex Albon on the 200-yard approach to the first corner.
The left-rear tyre of Abon’s blue-liveried car came detached in and flew in the direction of Daniel Ricciardo’s AlphaTauri further back. It missed the Australian’s head by inches and instead landed on his rear wing.
Nobody was hurt.
It appeared that Albon, who started 13th, was nudged by the Haas of Nico Hulkenberg. Albon then tagged Magnussen.

Hulkenberg’s car was largely unharmed though the tyre bounced narrowly to the left of him before the RIcciardo scare.
Ricciardo turned frantically left in reaction to the stray rubber bouncing its way towards him. ’I tried to miss it but the tyre was in the air and it clipped my rear wing,’ he said over the radio.’
The carcass weighs 11.5kg, 1.5 times as much as a bowling ball.
He returned to the pits for repairs during the long suspension in racing.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc crashed out on the formation lap at Turn 8. He blamed his demise on a hydraulic fault. ‘Why the f*** am I so unlucky?’ he exclaimed over the radio.
