England closed in on a place in the World Cup quarter-finals last night thanks to a clunky win over Japan that was sparked by a ball bouncing off Joe Marler’s head.
Steve Borthwick’s side made it two wins from two after skipper Courtney Lawes scored a bizarre try set up by a pass that cannoned off Marler’s Mohawk, before Freddie Steward and Joe Marchant crossed to secure a bonus point.
England can book their spot in the last eight with a game to go against Chile on Saturday.
Speaking in jest post-game, Marler said: ‘It was planned. You won’t believe me, but Cole and George in our activation warm-up, part of it was practising our headers and it came to fruition tonight.’
Earlier, Fiji stunned Eddie Jones’s Australia with a brilliant 22-15 win in Saint-Etienne.
