‘I started sobbing’: Ray Hadley shares moving Bozo story as he reveals bid for state funeral

Broadcaster Ray Hadley has shared a touching story about the impact the recently-deceased Bob Fulton had on his life while revealing plans are afoot to give ex-Kangaroos coach a state funeral.

Fulton, 73, passed away on Sunday leaving the rugby league world in shock.

The Immortal and long-time Manly patriarch shared the airwaves with Hadley for a number of years on 2GB.

And speaking on NRL360 on Fox League, Hadley lifted the lid on the pair’s friendship.

“I was having a rough trot about six years ago and my daughter was in the US,” Hadley said.

“I made overtures to bring her back, I’d had a marriage break-up. She resisted the chance to come back and I didn’t know why.

“I said to her sisters: ‘you’ve got to get Emma back for my 60th birthday party. It’s a really important thing’. She kept making excuses and kept talking about it.”

But what Hadley didn’t realise is that Fulton had already been plotting a surprise arrival at Hadley’s 60th birthday.

As he got up to give a speech, Hadley got the shock of his life and was moved to tears.

“What I didn’t know is Bob and Anne spoke to her privately and said: ‘you’re coming back for your fathers’ birthday party but you can’t tell him’. She kept resisting my overtures,” Hadley said.

“So on the night, I’m in a room with all the people I love including the Fultons and I’m in the middle of thanking everyone for coming.

“Through the door walks my middle daughter, I started sobbing and because I was overwhelmed and I look across the line and here and Bozo’s going: ‘gotcha’.

“I said to her, to confirm what happened and she says: Mr and Mrs Fulton brought me out.

“I hugged him on the 27th of March when he came to my wedding, I just kept hugging him because I couldn’t believe that someone would do that for me. That was a measure of the man.”

Hadley also revealed he had been in contact with the relevant authorities about giving Fulton a state funeral in NSW.

“I’ve had conversations with the premier and deputy premier in the last 12 hours,” Hadley revealed. “While not giving too much away, PVL gave a request to John Barilaro.

“I’d be astounded if tomorrow morning we don’t get news by about 9.30am-10am.

“The family has been offered a state funeral, whether they accept that it’s entirely up to them. It’s purely a matter for the Fulton family.

“Does he deserve it? By oath he does. Would he want it? Probably he’d be vacillating.”
