Merrett to succeed Heppell as Essendon captain
The new-look Essendon will feature Zach Merrett as club captain, with Andy McGrath to join the accomplished midfielder as vice-captain.
Essendon have their first new skipper since 2016 after veteran Dyson Heppell last week stood down from the role after six seasons.
Three-time best and fairest winner Merrett was the popular and unsurprising selection for the role.

But the 27-year-old two-time All-Australian said he was humbled to be named as the 41st captain of the Bombers.
“This is a great club with a great future, and I look forward to playing my role as an on-field and off-field leader,” Merrett said in a statement.
“I feel very [humbled] to have been given this opportunity, and I thank Brad Scott, the coaching staff, football department and my teammates for their confidence.
“This is a privilege which I am very grateful for and am very much looking forward to. There’s great energy around the group. With Andy and I as captains, supported by a group of emerging leaders, we are all united and aligned in our vision to take us back to being a successful football club.”
More to come.
