Robinson says talk of Brett Morris’ retirement is premature

Roosters coach Trent Robinson won’t concede Brett Morris’ career is over until the 34-year-old himself makes a call on his future.

Morris went down with a torn ACL on Saturday night during their 38-4 win against the Knights, in what was likely the veteran’s last game in the NRL.

The Roosters’ injury ward is bulging after the weekend, as Linday Collins also suffered a torn ACL against the Knights and Sam Verrills is facing two months out after having surgery on his eye.

Verrills had blurry vision 10 days ago and saw an optometrist on Monday when the unclear vision returned. He was passed onto a specialist who diagnosed him with a semi-detached retina.

Robinson said Verrills can’t remember an incident where the injury could have occurred.

Verrills has played just two games since returning from a torn ACL which kept him on the sidelines for a huge chunk of the 2020 season.

“He had to get that glued back down to try and return all of his eyesight and get rid of the blurred vision, but also there’s also the small risk of losing some partial bits there,” Robinson said. “That was one from left field that we didn’t see coming.”

Robinson said the timing of the injury was tough.

“We get over the initial parts and then you get a phone call about Sam Verrills who you’ve been excited about having come back in … and then you get a call like that from left field it sits you back down again,” he said.

Because of the long injury list at the club, Robinson said Joseph Suaalii’s debut is now closer than ever.

“He will play. There is no doubt he will play soon,” Robinson said. “He’s training really well. He’s in every meeting. He was obviously 18th man last week. He’s preparing to play and when that time comes, he’ll be ready.”

James Tedesco is expected to make a return from concussion on Friday for the Roosters’ round-nine clash against the Eels, with captain Boyd Cordner on target to return in round 14.
