State of Origin Game 1 live updates

Welcome to our live coverage and updates for State of Origin Game 1.

The series opener kicks off from 8.10pm (AEST) from Queensland Country Bank Stadium in Townsville.

There was upheaval just hours out from the match with Origin icon Mal Meninga sensationally suggesting Blues playmaker Jarome Luai should not be eligible to play.

The Maroons legend said Luai should not meet the State of Origin selection criteria because of his public declarations that he will snub the chance to play international football for Australia and will instead play with Samoa.

Meninga says only Australian players should be eligible to play in State of Origin –

“My preference is that if you make yourself available for NSW and Queensland that first and foremost you are available for the Kangaroos,” Meninga told The Daily Telegraph.

“You might describe that as selfish but I want to keep the fabric of Origin clean.

“I’m a huge fan of the international game and I don’t begrudge players wanting to play for their ancestors and their country.”

Cameron Smith rubbishes Origin myth ahead of Game 1

Amid the NRL’s controversial high shot crackdown, Maroons halfback Daly Cherry-Evans called for a “gentlemen’s agreement” between the two teams whereby no player would stay down to milk a penalty for a high tackle.

However, not everyone’s a fan of the suggestion.

Melbourne Storm great Cameron Smith was bemused by the “gentlemen’s agreement” claim while speaking on SEN 1170’s The Captain’s Run on Wednesday.

“Please. No way,” Smith said.

“These players are out there to win State of Origin. People don’t realise how hard it is to win a State of Origin game.

“If it comes down to the last two minutes of a game or the last five minutes of the game and the scores are level and you cop a slap in the face, they will lie down. I will promise you that.

“Is it a good look for the game? No it’s not, but it is a direct result of these new rules. You’ve seen players lay down for a penalty because of how strict they are with contact. It’s not a new thing with this crackdown on high tackles but if it happens tonight and scores are level, someone gets hit high, I’ll tell you they will be laying on the ground.”
