Why Kevin Walters changed his mind on Karmichael Hunt

Broncos coach Kevin Walters has admitted he changed his mind on Karmichael Hunt just weeks after ruling out signing the former Brisbane premiership winner.

Walters broke his silence on Hunt, who is expected to join the team on Monday, in the aftermath of a his side’s gutsy 20-12 loss to the Panthers, but he took some prodding.

“I’m not sure on that, I won’t make any comment on that tonight,” Walters said with a smirk when asked about Hunt.

“You’re smirking Kevvie, I know you know something,” Peter Badel replied.

“Come on you are the coach of the club you must know if he is coming.”

“We have made some inquiries on Karmichael,” Walters relented.

“We are just waiting to get the green light I guess.

“He is a former Bronco and a good experienced player so yeah.”

The journalists persisted asking why Walters ruled out signing Hunt two weeks ago only to do a backflip.

“What did I rule it out?” Walters replied.

“Oh well can I . . . am I allowed to change my mind?

“The performance of the side (is what changed in two weeks).

“I feel Karmichael can add to this group with his presence so we will see what happens.”

Walters revealed Hunt will be in contention by Round 10 at the earliest.

“Oh well he won’t be available until he gets into the top 30, so hmm,” Walters said.

“I think Round 10 he can come in yeah.

“So we just want to get him in and have a look at him and get him around the group and see what he can offer and what he can bring.

“He is playing on Sunday go and have a look at him. I will be out there as well.”

On his side’s heroic performance against the unbeaten Panthers, Walters was surprisingly disappointed after his team couldn’t ice the win despite leading 12-10 deep into the second half.

“Oh yeah we had a crack, but I’m actually disappointed more than anything,” Walters said.

“We were in it that last 15 minutes and if we executed a few things better we win the game and we didn’t.

“There is a lot to take out of it, but this club is about winning and that is our third or fourth loss in a row.

“Certainly some better moments from us particularly in the first half, but we lost our way a bit in the second half and they were a bit too good in the end.”
