Why NSW star copped all-time Origin spray

It was one of the best and most memorable sledges in State of Origin history.

With the 2015 series tied, Queensland thumped NSW 52-6 in the decider at Suncorp Stadium.

The loss was painful but it was more so for Blues halfback Mitchell Pearce, who’s personal run of Origin misery continued with yet another failed series.

He had missed out on the victorious 2014 series and was yet to touch the shield.

So during that game three thumping Maroons star Johnathan Thurston let his opposite playmaker know about it.

“He should probably get a photo with Wally’s (Wally Lewis) statue (outside Suncorp Stadium), because that’s the closest he was going to get to holding the (Origin) shield,” Thurston fired off at Pearce.

Now Thurston has revealed why he picked Pearce out with the brutal sledge.

Thurston said Pearce had led the NSW side in the first two games in relentlessly sledging the Queenslanders, and he even told Thurston he was “too old”.

Walters defends Greenberg

NRL: Kevin Walters believes Todd Greenberg is being unfairly criticised in his role as NRL CEO.

“It wasn’t just Pearcey that I wanted to get over the top of,” Thurston told Wide World of Sports.

“I always wanted to get over the top of my opposition number, I always wanted to play better than him.

“That period there when there was a fair bit of banter between the two teams, I couldn’t believe what he (Pearce) was saying about some of our players at the time after one of the games.

“I just put that in my memory bank form when we played them next and it was fortunate, we put 50 on them that night and I let him know about it.

“I always wanted to be better than the opposition player, that’s how I approached the game.”

Pearce finally got his Origin fairytale when he was recalled to the NSW team in 2019, which the Blues won.

But with Thurston since retired, Pearce never did get one over his rival in the Origin arena.
