Ajax’s calamitous start to the season continued today as they travelled to face fellow Eredivisie strugglers Utrecht.

The hosts entered the clash with seven defeats in their opening eight games but managed to take the lead before the interval courtesy of a goal from Dutch youth international Ryan Flamingo.

Things would go from bad to worse for Maurice Steijn’s side following the break, as Mike van der Hoorn doubled Utrecht’s lead after goal line technology confirmed his header had crossed the line.

Despite their poor form of late Ajax rallied back, with a quick-fire brace from Kristian Hlynsson levelling the game on 55 minutes.

Club captain Steven Bergwijn then put his side ahead from the penalty spot ten minutes later, but Ajax’s defensive vulnerabilities remained on full display as their lead was promptly ended as Jens Toornstra equalised for the hosts.

But their fellow Eredivisie strugglers hit back minutes later to level the game at 3-3

Supporter discontent with results on the pitch has reached an all-time high in recent weeks and the match official took no chances after a fan threw a plastic cup on the pitch, suspending the action and ordering the players off with just one minute of time remaining.

More than ten minutes went by but play was eventually resumed, with the afternoon’s final shock still to come.

With the action back underway, Utrecht immediately seized the initiative as substitute Oscar Luigi Fraulo netted to condemn the visitors to their fourth consecutive league defeat.

Bergwijn was pictured speaking with angry supporters after the game but his attempts will provide little solace as the club slips to the lowest position in its entire history, just one point off bottom.

The result comes just weeks after Ajax fans threw flares onto the pitch after falling 3-0 behind against Feyenoord at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

Riot police were forced to intervene to prevent the incident from escalating and the derby was eventually abandoned 11 minutes into the second half.

Some supporters tried to break back into the stadium after the game had been suspended, causing damage to the ground as they began to vandalise their own stadium.

Police used tear gas in an attempt to disperse the crowds that had gathered on the perimeter of the ground.
