England legend Alex Scott sent a thinly veiled message to Joey Barton.

Barton has faced heavy criticism over the last few days for a series of unhinged rants against female pundits and commentators. In one of the tirades on X, formerly known as Twitter, he wrote: "Women shouldn't be talking with any kind of authority" in the men's game and compared it to him talking about "knitting and netball.".

He has been put in his place by TNT Sport presenter and ex-radio host Laura Woods and Chelsea women manager Emma Hayes. After watching Arsenal overcome Chelsea 4-1 in the FAWSL, in front of 59,000 strong crowd at the Emirates Stadium, Scott launched a firm message to Barton, who was recently sacked by Bristol Rovers.

“Just before we say goodbye, to all of the women in football,” Scott said during the BBC’s coverage.

“In front of the camera, behind it, to the players on the pitch, to everyone that attended, keep being the role models that you continue to be.

“For all those little girls that are told: ‘no, you can’t,’ football is a better place with us all in it.”

Barton has been firing out disparaging and wide-sweeping statements on Twitter like there is no tomorrow. He even tried to justify his strange thoughts in an interview with Piers Morgan.

One of his many verbal tirades said: "Women shouldn’t be talking with any kind of authority in the men’s game. Come on. Let’s be serious. It’s a completely different game. If you don’t accept that.

"We will always see things differently. The women’s game is thriving. Fantastic to see. I cannot take a thing they say serious in the men’s arena."
