Anfield and Emirates miss out as stadiums for UK and Ireland Euro 2028 bid named

The United Kingdom and Ireland's joint bid to host the 2028 European Championships will not feature two of England's most iconic football grounds.

Anfield and the Emirates Stadium have both been 'snubbed' from selection with Stamford Bridge and Elland Road also not favoured for the quadrennial tournament. The grounds of Liverpool and Chelsea are deemed unsuitable to host matches at Euro 2028 due to the size of their pitch, whilst a lack of resources from the local authorities is the reason for Elland Road's omission.

Instead, the Premier League stadia have been ousted in preference of League One and Championship venues with Stadium MK and Sunderland's Stadium of Light set to be included in the final package.

The UK and Ireland's joint bid to host a first full home finals since Euro '96 still faces competition from Turkey, who are also bidding to host Euro 2032 against Italy.

According to The Times, just six English stadiums will be used should the UK and Ireland win the bid to host the tournament with the list of contenders now down to 10.

The iconic Wembley Stadium and the newly-built Tottenham Hotspur Stadium are likely to form the two London venues but the London Stadium is still in contention at this stage.

Villa Park, Stadium MK, Old Trafford, the Etihad, Stadium of Light, St.James' Park and Everton's planned Bramley Moore Dock ground, scheduled for completion in time for the 2024/25 season, have made the final shortlist.

The report states that others, such as Southampton’s St Mary’s, might still qualify for the list if hospitality facilities are upgraded.

If the joint bid is successful, it is understood that Ireland will have two host stadiums, likely to be the Aviva Stadium and Croke Park. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will have one host stadium each.
