Antonio Conte rules out Christian Eriksen exit from Inter Milan

Antonio Conte RULES OUT Christian Eriksen’s exit from Inter Milan and says ‘nobody will leave’ the club this month amid rumours of Tottenham return as he urges midfielder to ‘come out of his shell’ after stunning free kick against rivals AC Milan

  • Christian Eriksen will not be leaving Inter Milan in January insists Antonio Conte
  • The struggling star scored a stunning free kick against rivals AC Milan this week
  • He has been linked with a return to Spurs after struggling to adapt to life in Italy
  • But Conte ruled out any exits and said Eriksen has quality to succeed at the club

Inter Milan boss Antonio Conte says struggling midfielder Christian Eriksen is going nowhere this month after he netted a superb free kick against rivals AC Milan.

Eriksen has been with the Italian giants for less than a year but has failed to reproduce his dazzling midfield displays from his Tottenham days, and has been heavily linked with a return to north London.

Arsenal have been mooted, while PSG are said to be interested in a move that would reunite him with  former boss Mauricio Pochettino. But Conte has poured cold water on reports that Eriksen is heading away from the San Siro, insisting there will be no comings or going in the January transfer window.

Inter downed their local rivals AC on Tuesday night after a 2-1 win in the Coppa Italia, with Eriksen firing in an excellent set-piece in the 97th minute to clinch the victory.

When asked about the possibility of Eriksen departing after his performance, Conte told RAI Sport: ‘For a month now I’ve been saying the same thing: this is the Inter squad. Nobody will arrive, nobody will leave. I keep saying it and nobody seems to believe me.

‘We are working with Eriksen on a tactical level to find an alternative for [Marcelo] Brozovic, because we don’t have someone like that in the squad.

‘Christian is a very intelligent lad, he has quality, he’s part of the project and I am happy he scored that goal. I really wanted him to take it, as we all know the quality he has from set plays.’

Conte said he hoped Eriksen would kick on after his goal and ‘come out of his shell’

Conte urged the 28-year-old to use his goal as motivation to kickstart his Inter career and said he needed to ‘come out of his shell’ and be ‘more determined’.

‘He’s very shy, so I hope this goal can shake him up and make him come out of his shell. We all like him, he’s a good lad, perhaps too good! He needs to be more determined.’

Eriksen asked to leave Tottenham last January after six years in north London, stressing the need to experience ‘something new’, but after interest from Real Madrid cooled, Inter emerged as the main suitors for his signature, and signed him for around £16m with his contract running down.

Eriksen has been linked with a return to former club Spurs after struggling to adapt at Inter

He has found himself marginalised by Conte and has struggled to produce his best form

But while he was one of the key men at Spurs, he has found life tough in Serie A, playing just 40 times, scoring four goals. He has also been a target for PSG, where his former boss Mauricio Pochettino has just taken over.

Conte’s words come after club CEO Giuseppe Giuseppe Marotta confirmed last month that Eriksen was on the transfer list and claimed he was ‘not functional’ to the squad this season.

He said: ‘Eriksen is on the transfer list, Piero Ausilio confirmed as much. He has struggled to settle into the squad, he is not functional to the squad. That is not any insult towards his professionalism, there is no punishment.

‘It’s just a situation that has developed and it’s only fair he goes where he can play more regularly.’
