Antonio Rudiger flies back to Madrid wearing huge bandage following nasty injury

Real Madrid star Antonio Rudiger was sporting a huge bandage after suffering a nasty head injury in the Champions League.

The former Chelsea defender collided with Shakhtar Donetsk keeper Anatoliy Trubin as he headed in a 95th-minute equaliser for Carlo Ancelotti's side, which rescued a 1-1 draw on their travels. His forehead was sliced open as a result of the coming together.

Blood poured down Rudiger's face and onto his contrastingly white Real kit while he received medical attention on the pitch. Fortunately, he was able to fly back to Madrid with the rest of the squad.

And it was from their private jet where he shared an update on his condition, posting a selfie to his Instagram story which showed padding covering his right eye and heavy bandaging keeping it in place.

Rudiger wrote "we alive", adding in a separate post on his account: "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. I am okay – thanks for all your messages."

Despite his heroics, the centre-back wasn't content with being unable to see out the match, with Ancelotti revealing: "Rudiger had a deep cut on his eyebrow, but he still wanted to go on the pitch after it."

Rudiger was hailed by Chelsea and Real fans alike for his commitment. He was a fan favourite at Stamford Bridge but left in the summer after his contract had expired.

He's been in and out of the starting XI for his new team in recent weeks, facing stiff competition for a spot at the back alongside David Alaba and Eder Militao.

Alaba labelled his team-mate 'El Guerrero', or 'The Warrior', on his social media. Rudiger's goal meant Real are through to the knockout stages of the Champions League having picked up 10 points from their four group games so far.
